In addition to the offset we provide for our clients we also make a contribution on their behalf into planting native broadleaved British woodland.
Our native woodlands have been under attack since we began building shelters, lighting fires and farming intensively. “The wildwood reached its zenith about 6,000 years ago when it covered as much as 90% of the UK”. “By 1900, only 5% of the UK was covered by woodland.” Source: “Why the ancient woodland is still under threat” Woodland Trust 2005
Not only does managed planting help ensure that this habitat survives, trees lock up CO2 from the atmosphere as they grow. Approximately half of the dry weight of a tree is carbon. This carbon remains locked up until the tree dies, decays or is burned.
It is widely considered that due to climate change the next 50 years will be extremely good for tree growth. This may be the only chance we have to get plantations of native species such as Oak and Beech established. After this time these species may struggle to maintain a foothold in the UK and part of our heritage may be lost forever.
